Why Mozart Music?
In the absence of a “mother” for his experiments, Dr. Tomatis re-created the mother’s voice for his subjects by using Mozart music. Mozart is naturally very rich in the higher frequencies, those above 8000 hertz. These higher frequencies stimulated the brain. The music was filtered (to remove) all of the lower frequencies, those below 8000 hertz, leaving just the higher frequencies. When subjects received the higher frequencies, their speech, language, even coordination, posture and energy level improved. The lower frequencies were considered energy-draining. Listening only to low frequencies gave subjects a monotone, as well as put them in a state of depression. Because of its high frequency properties, the music of Mozart has been studied and found to be the best suited for simulating the developmental period of listening in the womb. The classical music of other composers does not have as many of the high frequencies (above 8000 hertz) left to its arrangements after a filtering process, which leaves little in the way of charging sounds needed to nourish the brain and induce a state of alertness and attention—one primed for learning.

Mozart's music improves spatial perception and allows listeners to more clearly express themselves and in doing so enhances communication both with the heart and the mind. The rhythm, melodies and higher frequencies of his compositions, most notably the violin concertos, stimulate the creative and motivational regions of the brain (MozartEffect.com). It is these higher harmonics that contribute to the acquisition of language. When Mozart music is filtered of the low, draining frequencies, it still has an abundance of higher harmonics for therapeutic support. Mozart has been shown to have therapeutic benefits for children with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Why Gregorian Chant?

Gregorian Chant is part of the auditory training process in the JoEE. It uses the rhythms of natural breathing. It is wonderful for meditating, and used as a stress reducer.
