The Ear-Brain Connection

The ear contains 3 parts: the outer, middle and inner ear. Sound travels as “vibratory energy through the auditory canal to the ear drum, vibrating through the middle ear bones. The inner ear converts the vibratory energy into electrochemical messages that are carried along the auditory nerve to the brain where it is then perceived and interpreted.

When auditory processing (the brain’s ability to interpret sounds) is distorted or disrupted in some way, there can be adverse effects on the interpretation of auditory information, which diminishes the brain’s ability to understand and organize the messages being sent.  For the population with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities this can cause behavioral problems, social and emotional problems, academic problems and even shut-down mode.

Exercising the muscles of the middle ear using modulated music of Mozart and other classical composers strengthens them so they work optimally and contribute to sensory integration and auditory processing; issues that affect the population with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and learning disabilities.
