Listen Up!
Adults
with Autism,
ADD/ADHD (Even adults can benefit from re-training their ears to listen) Many people with
autism and ADD/ADHD don’t have effective filtering mechanisms
and tend to take in every sound they hear. Their
bodies take in sounds before their ears do. We listen with both
our ears and our bones. But people with autism, ADD/ADHD listen
too much with their bones. The ears should be the first entrance
of sound, not the body. As a result of
listening too much with their bodies first, they receive a barrage
of unfiltered sounds that go straight to the brain by-passing
being processed by the inner ear. This can be painful and/or
distracting to them. It
can be overwhelming not to be able to screen out bombarding
information that they receive constantly all day long.
Subsequently they often shut down because it’s just too hard to
react to every stimuli, every piece of incoming information. They
can’t function properly. They often feel embarrassed because
they can’t keep up, whether it’s listening to a teacher in
class or to a boss in a meeting, whether it’s trying to remember
where you put your car keys, what you came to the grocery store
for or why you have difficulty packing a rather simple suitcase
– they find they can’t focus, organize their thoughts or
perform as they’d like. Consequently,
these people are often frustrated, full of anxiety and aggression
that can promote learning disabilities, trouble at work, trouble
in relationships and the like. It can be exhausting and draining.
This isn’t a good way to live. When you tune out and
don’t listen properly whether it’s tuning out to an
overbearing boss or nagging spouse, you don’t just tune out to
their voices, you start to tune out to that whole frequency range.
Over time, these frequencies become more difficult to pay
attention to and you lose them from your hearing. You then must
re-train your ears and your brain to attend to these lost
frequencies. They don’t just come back. You have to train them
to work well again. It’s just like exercising or lifting
weights. If you slouch off and become unfit, you have to spend
more time exercising and getting your body back in shape. That’s
the same idea behind auditory training. Sound Therapy Systems
re-trains the middle ear muscles which tend to become "flabby" when
they aren’t working properly and we help you get them in shape. By exercising the ear
muscles with various frequencies of music, particularly Mozart,
the ear muscles are forced to stretch and relax. That is how they
are strengthened. Strengthening the ear muscles makes it possible
for the ears to become better filters. When the ears filter sounds
efficiently and effectively, the body can modulate itself better
and not be over-stimulated or overwhelmed with unnecessary sounds.
The listener can then
focus better, pay attention better, have a better working memory
and be more relaxed and feel more comfortable about themselves.
They are more organized and on task.
When
you listen better you learn better & function better!
